How to Use EFT Tapping to Manage Daily Work Stress

The Science Behind EFT Tapping: Proven Techniques to Lower Stress

Let’s cut to the chase: We live in a world that thrives on stress. From the second you wake up to the moment your head hits the pillow, stress seems to be lurking around every corner. But here’s the thing—while stress might be unavoidable, living in a constant state of overwhelm doesn’t have to be.

That’s where EFT Tapping comes in. Sure, it sounds a bit out there—tapping on your body to relieve stress? But hang with me because the science backs it up. And if you’re anything like me, you want real results, not some fluffy promise that disappears after five minutes.

The Brain-Body Connection

Here’s the deal: EFT Tapping works by addressing both the emotional and physical effects of stress. It targets the body’s natural energy points (yeah, like acupuncture but without needles) to help calm your brain's stress centres, especially the amygdala—the part responsible for the fight-or-flight response. So, instead of spiralling into full-on panic mode, tapping sends a signal to your brain that it's okay to chill out.

What the Research Says (Because, Yes, It’s Proven)

In case you’re sceptical—and I get it, because who isn’t when it comes to stress-relief fads—research has proven EFT’s effectiveness. A 2012 study by Church et al. showed that a single EFT session can reduce cortisol levels by up to 24%. Cortisol, for those unfamiliar, is the hormone your body churns out when you're stressed. The more cortisol you have, the more stressed you feel.

Not only does EFT lower cortisol, but it also impacts your gene expression, improving immune function and reducing inflammation. This isn’t just about feeling a little less frazzled—it’s about real, measurable health benefits.

How EFT Rewires Your Brain for Less Stress

Here’s where EFT gets interesting: It’s not just a band-aid for stress. With regular practice, it can rewire how your brain responds to stressful situations. Over time, you’re training your brain to stay cool under pressure rather than defaulting to anxiety or panic.

Think of it like this: EFT isn’t just turning down the volume on stress—it’s resetting the whole system.

Proven Techniques You Can Start Today

If you’re looking to get started, here are a few key techniques to tap into (pun fully intended):

  1. Focus on the Stressor: Identify the specific thing that's stressing you out and rate the intensity from 0 to 10. Get honest—this is where the magic starts. The more specific and honest you are - Eg, “I hate that stupid f*cking email Robert sent me.” - the better.

  2. Use a Setup Phrase: Use this template phrase to ‘setup’ the tapping sequence: “Even though I’m f*cking hate that stupid email Robert sent because he was just trying to take credit for my work again, I deeply and completely accept myself.” Say this phrase three times while tapping on the side of your hand, then move immediately to the next step.

  3. Tap on Key Points: Now, use a snippet from your setup phrase to keep you focussed on the issue, eg, “That stupid f8cking email.” and tap five or six times on each point on the diagram below. these are: top of the head, inside eyebrow, outside eyebrow, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, under the arms on the side of your body. One round of this completes the tapping sequence and this is the part that helps engage both your mind and body in calming down. You can repeat this step as many times as you need to until you feel calmer.

  4. Assess and Repeat: After one or two rounds, take a sip of water and re-assess your stress level. If it's still high, go for another round. Keep tapping until it you feel considerably less stressed, gaining for 0 or 1 on the scale you used in Step 1 above.
